She was born on November 28, 1951, to Harlow and Barbara Thurow of Hinckley, IL. Susan graduated from Hinckley-Big Rock High School in 1969 and spent 13 years as a hairstylist at Peterson's Beauty Shop in Waterman, IL. She later worked at Jewel in the DeKalb and St. Charles locations for 15 years. Additionally, she provided in-home respite care for elderly families for over a decade. A longtime member of the First Lutheran Church in DeKalb, Susan was married to Gary Metcalf for 15 years, and together they had two children, Darrick (Lisa) Metcalf and Dawn (Russ) Bercier. She spent the last seven years of her life with her beloved partner, Joe Baird. They enjoyed day trips to Lake Geneva and Lake Shabbona, as well as vacations to Florida.
